Kaduna Health Workers Rejoice as Governor Sani Approves New Salary Structure, Hazard Allowance

Health workers in Kaduna State expressed relief on Wednesday after Governor Uba Sani approved the implementation of the 2024 Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) and hazard allowance, set to take effect in September 2025.

The announcement, welcomed by the medical community, was made during a press briefing by the Chairman of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Kaduna State chapter, Ishaku Yakubu. He described the approval as “long overdue,” noting that health professionals had endured years of neglect and unmet promises under previous administrations.

Yakubu recalled that nurses and other health workers had resorted to repeated strikes, including indefinite industrial actions, to demand the implementation of CONHESS and improved welfare. He praised the governor’s decision as a demonstration of political will, urging the government to ensure timely payments and sustained implementation to maintain staff morale.

Observers say the move marks a major policy shift in Kaduna’s health sector, which has suffered strained labour relations in the past, including mass dismissals of workers. By approving the new salary structure and allowances, the Sani administration is seen as taking a decisive step toward rebuilding trust, reducing brain drain, and strengthening healthcare delivery across the state.
