The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced the commencement of reconstruction at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
In a travel advisory issued on Friday, FAAN advised passengers to arrive well ahead of their departure times to avoid delays or missed flights as a result of disruptions caused by the ongoing works.
The reconstruction, part of a broader infrastructure upgrade in the aviation sector, follows the Federal Executive Council’s approval of over N900 billion for aviation projects on August 1, with MMIA’s Terminal One rehabilitation taking priority.
According to the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, the project entails stripping the terminal to its structural base and completely rebuilding its mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. The Lagos airport upgrade is valued at N712.25 billion and is expected to be completed within 22 months.
FAAN further appealed to travellers to follow traffic instructions, use designated car parks, and avoid unnecessary visits to the airport during the renovation due to limited space.
“We kindly request passengers to leave early for the airport, comply with all traffic directives, and note that only travellers should come to the airport during this period. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding,” FAAN stated.
MMIA remains Nigeria’s busiest airport and a vital hub for domestic and international travel.
