Workers’ Protest Shuts Down Flight Activities at Enugu Airport

Operations at Enugu’s international airport were thrown into disorder after aviation staff began a coordinated strike that forced a shutdown of key airport services. The protest centered on objections to a proposed plan to lease the airport to private investors.

Airport workers and union officials said the planned concession has raised fears about possible layoffs, changes in employment terms, and loss of worker protections. They insisted that the process should be paused until clearer guarantees are provided for existing staff.

As the protest unfolded, check-in counters, baggage handling, and airside operations were affected, making it impossible for airlines to continue normal flight schedules. Several carriers suspended their Enugu routes for the day as a result.

Passengers arriving for departures met locked service points and limited assistance, with many scrambling to adjust travel plans. Some airlines advised customers to monitor updates while discussions continue between authorities and labor groups.

Industry observers say the standoff highlights growing tension between aviation unions and regulators over infrastructure privatization, with negotiations expected to determine how soon full services can resume.
