The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that 2,802,790 voters are on the register for the upcoming Anambra State governorship election scheduled for Saturday, November 8, 2025.
In a statement issued on Thursday, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, disclosed that the commission carried out a voter registration exercise across the state’s 326 wards between July 8 and 20, 2025. A total of 168,187 applications were received from new registrants.
Olumekun explained that, in line with Section 19(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, the preliminary list of new voters was displayed for public scrutiny before being subjected to the Automated Biometric Identification System. This process identified and removed 27,817 cases of duplicate or multiple registrations, leaving 140,370 valid new registrants. Additionally, 5,983 transfer applications were approved, raising the total number of fresh entries to 146,353.
Before the exercise, Anambra had 2,656,437 registered voters. With the new additions, the number has increased to 2,802,790. Idemili North leads with the highest voter population of 246,318 (8.79%), followed by Awka South with 216,611 (7.73%) and Ogbaru with 188,016 (6.71%). Dunukofia and Anambra West recorded the lowest figures with 83,580 (2.98%) and 71,332 (2.55%) respectively.
INEC further assured that Permanent Voter Cards for new registrants, transfers, and replacements will be ready for collection ahead of the election. The Anambra poll is one of several off-cycle elections prompted by court-ordered adjustments to the electoral timetable. Sixteen political parties met the submission deadline of May 12, 2025, and will field candidates in the November election, with campaigns already underway.
