The Rivers State Central Working Committee on Flood Management and Control has unveiled plans to sensitise residents of Zone 3 on flood preparedness and mitigation strategies, particularly in flood-prone communities.

Rivers is among the states at elevated risk of flooding this year, with 148 local government areas across 31 states projected to be affected nationwide.

As part of its disaster readiness efforts, the state government is working to establish a State Emergency Management Agency to institutionalise preparedness and response measures. Meanwhile, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has been conducting simulation exercises in vulnerable communities to strengthen awareness and response coordination.

The sensitisation programme, scheduled to begin on Monday, September 8, 2025, at the Khana Local Government Council Secretariat by 11:00 am, will cover Andoni, Opobo/Nkoro, Khana, Gokana, Eleme, Tai, Oyigbo, Emohua, Bonny, Etche, Degema, Ogu/Bolo, and Obio/Akpor LGAs.

Expected participants include LGA chairmen, traditional rulers, community representatives, women, and youth groups. The initiative aims to boost community preparedness, reduce flood risks, and safeguard lives and property across the state.
