A UK medical tribunal has been told that consultant anaesthetist Dr. Suhail Anjum abandoned a patient under anaesthetic to engage in sexual activity with a nurse at Tameside Hospital in Greater Manchester.
Dr. Anjum allegedly requested a “comfort break” during a procedure, asking a colleague to monitor the patient, before going to another theatre where he was discovered in a “compromising position” with Nurse C. The incident was reported by a shocked colleague.
Andrew Molloy, representing the General Medical Council (GMC), confirmed that the patient was not harmed and the operation continued without issue.
The doctor admitted to the misconduct, calling his actions “shameful” and accepting full responsibility. He apologised to all involved, stating: “I only have myself to blame. I offer my sincere apologies and want the opportunity to put this right.” He explained that the incident occurred during a stressful period in his personal life.
The hearing is set to continue on Friday.
