The Hadejia Local Government Council in Jigawa State has commenced the construction of a three-kilometer tunnel to channel excess water from a pond into the River Hadejia.

In a statement issued in Dutse on Friday, the council’s Information Officer, Muhammad Talaki, said the project was inaugurated by the council chairman, Alhaji Ahmed Abba-Ari, at a cost of about N60 million.

According to Abba-Ari, the initiative is aimed at providing a lasting solution to the recurring flood disasters caused by overflow from the pond, popularly known as Jaribola. He explained that the annual flooding has been destroying farmlands, displacing families, damaging markets, and disrupting livelihoods in the area.

The chairman reiterated the council’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property by addressing the perennial flooding challenge. He noted that the tunnel, once completed, would significantly reduce the impact of seasonal floods and improve water management.

Also speaking, the Head of the Works Department, Alhaji Muhammad Ubale, expressed confidence that the contractor would deliver the project according to specifications and with all necessary facilities in place.

Flooding remains a major concern in Jigawa State, where heavy rains and overflowing rivers have displaced thousands of residents in recent years.
