Senate Shifts Plenary Resumption to October 7 Amid Extended Recess

The leadership of the 10th Senate has once again adjusted its legislative calendar, postponing the resumption of plenary sessions from September 23 to October 7, 2025.

The announcement, conveyed in an internal memo signed by Chinedu Akubueze, Chief of Staff to the Senate President, was made available to PUNCH Online on Tuesday. The decision effectively lengthens the Senate’s annual recess by two additional weeks, sparking concerns within the National Assembly.

Though no official explanation was given, insiders disclosed that the shift was to enable lawmakers fully participate in the October 1 Independence Day celebrations. In the memo titled “Notice of Shift in Plenary Resumption Date,” Akubueze apologised to senators for the late notice and urged them to adjust their schedules accordingly.

The Senate had earlier adjourned on July 24 for its annual recess, a move Senate President Godswill Akpabio defended as “chamber reciprocity” with the House of Representatives. With this latest extension, pending motions, oversight probes, and debates on executive appointments will remain on hold until October.
