US Reiterates Visa Ban Policy Against Corrupt Individuals in Nigeria

The United States Mission in Nigeria has restated its commitment to the global fight against corruption, warning that individuals found guilty of corrupt practices, no matter their rank or influence, risk being barred from entering the US.

The Mission issued the reminder on Monday through its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, stressing that accountability has no boundaries. “Fighting corruption knows no borders or limits on accountability. Even when high-profile individuals engage in corruption, they can be barred from receiving US visas,” the post read.

This position aligns with earlier measures announced in May 2023, when the US government imposed visa bans on certain individuals accused of undermining Nigeria’s democratic process during the 2023 general elections.

At the time, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized Washington’s commitment to promoting democracy both in Nigeria and globally, noting that specific individuals had been placed under visa restrictions for actions that compromised the credibility of the polls.
