Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have advanced to the Round of 16 at the ongoing FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile after a hard-fought 1–1 draw against Colombia in Talca early Monday morning.
Goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt produced crucial saves in the 23rd and 26th minutes to keep Nigeria in the game, while forwards Tahir Maigana, Kparobo Arierhi, and Suleman Sani threatened the Colombian defense, with several shots narrowly missing target.
Colombia took the lead in the 51st minute through Kener Gonzalez, who converted a pass from Neyser Villareal. However, Nigeria equalized four minutes from time when captain Daniel Bameyi confidently scored from the penalty spot after Maigana’s shot was handled in the area.
Defender Odinaka Okoro and striker Arierhi came close to securing victory late in the game, but their efforts were denied by the Colombian defense.
With the draw, Nigeria will now face Argentina on Wednesday at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos in Santiago a rematch of their 2023 quarterfinal clash in San Juan, where the Flying Eagles defeated the hosts 2–0.
Colombia will take on South Africa, while Norway meets Paraguay in other Round of 16 fixtures.
