“INEC Hits Back at Fake Voter Registration Deadline Making Rounds Online”

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has moved quickly to squash a misleading online post claiming it announced a new deadline for voter registration. The commission described the graphic being shared on social media as inaccurate and urged Nigerians to disregard the circulating message entirely.

According to the electoral body, the image in question suggested a cutoff date that was never officially approved or published by INEC. Officials emphasized that such fake timelines only serve to confuse eligible voters and undermine efforts to educate citizens about the real registration process.

INEC reassured the public that genuine information about voter registration and other electoral activities will always be released through its official channels, including authorised social media accounts and formal press statements. The commission also warned against spreading unverified content, especially during a period when many Nigerians are preparing for upcoming elections.

Election authorities have noted an uptick in fabricated posts related to electoral timelines and requirements, many of which mislead the public about key dates and procedures. INEC reiterated that relying on unconfirmed sources could cause citizens to miss important opportunities to participate in the democratic process.

In closing, the commission called on journalists, civil society groups and ordinary citizens to help stop the spread of misinformation by checking facts before sharing content online. INEC stressed that maintaining a well-informed electorate is vital for ensuring credible and inclusive elections.
