Abia Labour Party Reps Accuse Deputy Speaker of Fueling Division, Undermining Governor Otti
The Labour Party (LP) Caucus in the House of Representatives has condemned what it described as the “reckless and divisive conduct” of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, accusing him of arrogance and deliberate attempts to destabilize Abia State.
In a statement on Tuesday, the caucus expressed dismay over Kalu’s recent comments, recalling that since 2024 he had boasted publicly that the All Progressives Congress (APC) would “capture Abia” by 2027 — remarks the lawmakers described as “unintelligent, insensitive, and unbecoming of a national leader.”
The caucus alleged that since assuming the role of Deputy Speaker, Kalu has repeatedly made “provocative and sycophantic statements,” aimed at discrediting the administration of Governor Alex Otti, OFR, and inciting the Federal Government against the Abia State Government.
According to the lawmakers, Kalu’s actions reflect “a pattern of arrogance and personal ambition,” reminiscent of his past political feuds in the South East.
They noted that despite Governor Otti’s consistent display of political maturity — including hosting an elaborate state reception in Kalu’s honour and directing Labour Party lawmakers to support his emergence as Deputy Speaker — Kalu has failed to reciprocate the goodwill.
The caucus outlined several observations, urging Kalu to:
1. Exercise restraint and self-reflection, as his inflammatory remarks do not reflect the dignity of his office.
2. Show humility and decorum, recognizing that true leadership is not defined by position but by character.
3. Use his federal influence to support Abia’s development, particularly the many federal projects facilitated by Governor Otti, such as the Port Harcourt Road, Ohafia–Arochukwu Road, Omenuko Bridge, and the Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene Road.
4. Desist from political mischief, especially in response to the widespread public endorsement of Otti’s developmental strides — an event recently applauded by President Bola Tinubu, represented by Works Minister David Umahi.
The lawmakers warned that if Kalu continues on his current path, he risks alienating himself from the people of Abia, who, they said, “are politically enlightened and can see through his self-serving agenda.”
Reaffirming their support for Governor Otti, the LP caucus urged all Abians — including traders, professionals, elders, and youth — to unite behind the state’s ongoing transformation and reject efforts to derail progress.
“Power ultimately belongs to God,” the statement concluded.
