Defending champions Kano Pillars kicked off their title defence in style at the Nigeria Amputee Football Championship in Abuja, emerging as one of the standout teams alongside Niger FC on the tournament’s opening day.

In a thrilling encounter, Pillars edged Plateau State FC 2–1. Bethel Emmanuel opened the scoring for the champions before Abdullahi Mohammed drew Plateau level. Emmanuel later sealed victory for Pillars with a late strike, completing his brace.

Debutants Gida Gida FC also delivered a spirited performance but fell 1–0 to Niger FC, who secured the win courtesy of a decisive goal from Mohammed Nasiru. Despite sustained pressure from the newcomers, Niger’s composure and experience ensured they held on for all three points.

Kano Pillars returned later in the day to reinforce their dominance, cruising to a 3–0 victory over Kaduna FC in their second fixture. Despite playing twice in one day, the champions looked sharp and clinical, sending a strong message of intent to retain their crown.

Speaking after the matches, Paul Maduakor, President of the Nigeria Amputee Football Federation, praised the high level of competition and organisation, describing the championship as a key avenue for unearthing new talent ahead of the Amputee Football World Cup.

> “I’m impressed with the enthusiasm and standard of play,” Maduakor said. “This championship is helping us identify the best players to represent Nigeria globally, while also integrating emerging talents into the national setup.”

The Federation’s Technical Director, Victor Nwenwe, also commended the new entrants for their strong showing, noting that the tournament reflects the sport’s growing development in Nigeria.

> “The level of play has been exceptional,” he said. “The new teams have shown great promise, and we’re optimistic about discovering outstanding players from this competition.”

This year’s edition features six teams — Kano Pillars, Kaduna FC, Niger FC, Plateau FC, Gida Gida FC, and Kano Pillars 2 — with matches continuing throughout the week in the nation’s capital.
