The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has informed the Federal High Court in Abuja that the health condition of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, is not life-threatening.
The announcement follows a health assessment conducted by a medical panel appointed by the NMA President, as ordered by the court. The panel concluded that Kanu is medically fit to stand trial.
The directive for an independent medical evaluation came two weeks ago from Justice James Omotosho, following conflicting medical reports submitted by the prosecution and defence. Kanu is facing charges from the Federal Government related to alleged terrorism.
During Thursday’s proceedings, the prosecution, led by Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), submitted the panel’s report, stating that Kanu’s illness does not pose any immediate danger to his life. Based on these findings, and with no objections from either party, Justice Omotosho affirmed that Kanu could continue with his trial.
The court granted Kanu six consecutive days, starting October 23, to present and conclude his defence. Additionally, the judge approved a request by Kanu’s lead counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), for a private consultation between Kanu and his legal team outside the Department of State Services (DSS) premises. The consultation, scheduled for 9 a.m. to 12 noon on October 22, will take place in the courtroom with only Kanu and his lawyers present.
