Hundreds of young Nigerians on Saturday participated in the “Progress in Pink Walk”, a breast cancer awareness rally organised by the All Progressives Congress (APC) Youth Wing in Abuja to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

According to a statement released on Sunday, the four-kilometre walk, themed “Walk for Hope, Walk for Life,” kicked off at The Nest Resource Centre and was led by the APC National Youth Leader, Dr. Dayo Israel.

Addressing participants, Dr. Israel stressed the importance of early detection and proactive health checks in reducing breast cancer fatalities. He applauded President Bola Tinubu’s administration for making an unprecedented budgetary commitment to cancer diagnosis and treatment in the 2025 fiscal year. “Women should understand their bodies and act swiftly when they notice anything unusual. Awareness and early detection save lives,” he said.

Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Salako, commended the APC Youth Wing for championing public health advocacy, noting that eight out of ten breast cancer cases in Nigeria are discovered at late stages. He urged Nigerians to embrace regular medical check-ups, preventive care, and healthy lifestyles.

Also speaking, the President of the Nigerian Cancer Society, Prof. Abidemi Omonisi, revealed that breast cancer accounts for 40–50% of all cancer cases in the country. He called for stronger community-based awareness efforts and lauded the APC Youth Wing for mobilising young people to drive meaningful social change.

The event concluded with free medical screenings for participants and a renewed commitment to promoting early detection, regular screening, and healthy living. Organisers said the walk highlighted the strength of unity, awareness, and collective responsibility in the fight against breast cancer.
