NAFDAC Issues Urgent Alert Over Suspected Fake SMA Gold Infant Formula in Kaduna

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has alerted the public to the circulation of a suspected tampered batch of SMA Gold infant milk in Kaduna State after a reported case of illness in a baby.

The agency disclosed that preliminary findings showed possible manipulation of the product’s expiry date, with discrepancies observed between the original markings and what appeared on the packaging. This raised concerns that the product may have been altered to extend its shelf life before being sold to consumers.

Health officials linked the product to a case involving a four-month-old infant who developed symptoms after consuming the formula. Authorities warned that using expired or compromised baby food could pose serious health risks, including infections and nutritional harm.

NAFDAC has intensified monitoring efforts and instructed distributors and retailers to remove any suspicious products from circulation. Parents and caregivers have also been advised to carefully inspect infant food items before use and report any concerns to the appropriate authorities.
