The Government of Abia State has expressed delight over the state’s selection as the host of the 63rd meeting of the Nigeria National Committee of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), scheduled to take place in Umuahia in November 2025.
A delegation from WAEC, led by Mrs. Mary Chima, the Abia State Branch Controller, made the formal announcement during a courtesy visit to the state government yesterday.
Mrs. Chima described the Nigeria National Committee as WAEC’s highest policy-making body in the country, comprising Commissioners of Education, Heads of WAEC Offices, and senior national officers who collectively shape examination policies and educational standards across Nigeria.
Welcoming the news, the Abia State Government expressed appreciation for the honour and viewed it as a chance to highlight the state’s ongoing strides in education reform. The government noted that numerous schools across the state are currently being renovated or fully reconstructed, while efforts to enhance teacher quality and curriculum standards are yielding positive results.
In addition, the government announced plans to recruit 5,000 new qualified teachers to further strengthen the education system, emphasizing that Abia is well-prepared to host such a prestigious national event.
The statement concluded with a pledge to uphold the values of academic excellence, integrity, discipline, and innovation, while deepening collaboration with key stakeholders in the education sector.
