The Conference of Directors and Chief Road Traffic Officers of the Federation has called for stronger motor vehicle administration systems to enhance national security and improve road safety across Nigeria.
Speaking at a press briefing in Jos, Plateau State, on Monday, the National Chairman of the association, Paul Bepeh, emphasized that effective vehicle administration is not merely a regulatory issue but a cornerstone of national security. The briefing was part of activities marking the 2025 national conference themed “Enhancing National Security and Road Traffic Safety through Effective Motor Vehicle Administration in Nigeria.”
Bepeh noted that gaps in vehicle registration, inspection, and licensing processes have created loopholes exploited for crimes such as smuggling, terrorism, and kidnapping. He identified major challenges confronting Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) and the motor vehicle administration system, including excessive focus on revenue generation, weak legal frameworks, neglect of vehicle inspection, and lack of standardization.
To address these issues, Bepeh urged the adoption of a unified legal framework across all states and the FCT, digital transformation of vehicle administration processes, capacity building for officers, and stronger collaboration among key agencies such as the FRSC, police, and customs. He also called for public enlightenment and institutional reform to strengthen the VIO structure and improve staff welfare.
Represented by the association’s General Secretary, Durojaye Olalekan, Bepeh said the conference would provide a platform to deliberate on reforms and share global best practices. Plateau State Commissioner for Transportation, Jatau Gyang, welcomed participants, noting that the state’s transport initiatives—such as the Jos Greater Master Plan and Tin City Metro Buses—have enhanced safety and convenience, aligning with the conference’s objectives.
The three-day national conference, hosted by Plateau State, brings together officers from all 36 states to strategize on improving Nigeria’s vehicle administration system for better road safety and security.
