Abia State Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chimezie Ukaegbu, has clarified that the introduction of electric buses in the state is not aimed at displacing existing transport companies but rather at promoting healthy competition and improved service delivery.
Speaking during a working visit to the headquarters of Abia Line Network in Umuahia, Dr. Ukaegbu explained that the soon-to-be-launched electric buses are part of the state’s Urban Mass Transit initiative designed to modernize the transport system and enhance efficiency.
He said the visit was to assess the company’s facilities, as the government is committed to ensuring its effective operation and increased revenue generation. He encouraged staff of Abia Line Network to work collectively to achieve the government’s vision for a safer and more organized transport sector.
Dr. Ukaegbu emphasized Governor Alex Otti’s determination to transform transportation in Abia State, noting that the planned Central Bus Terminal will serve as a one-stop transport hub for all operators in major cities. He added that the administration’s efforts are focused on promoting safety, discipline, and orderliness in the sector.
Earlier, the Chairman of Abia State Transport Corporation, Emmanuel Ufomba, thanked the Commissioner for his visit and appealed to the government to assist in renovating the corporation’s dilapidated structures.
Ufomba also urged the state government to strengthen collaboration with other states to ensure mutual business cooperation and fairness, pledging the company’s full support for government policies and efforts to revitalize the transport system.
