Alleged Confession Sparks Fresh Debate Over Arms Supply to Herdsmen

A viral video circulating on social media has stirred national debate after a man identified as a Fulani herdsman claimed that the government has been supplying firearms to armed groups operating in rural communities. In the footage, the man stated that Fulani herders traditionally have no connection with guns and insisted that weapons such as AK-47 rifles were provided to them by government actors.

The alleged confession, in which the speaker repeatedly swore by Allah to affirm his claims, has triggered widespread reactions from citizens, security analysts, and civil society organisations. Many have called for an urgent and transparent investigation to verify the authenticity of the video and the circumstances surrounding the man’s statements.

Security experts say the claims, if confirmed, would raise serious concerns about the proliferation of illegal arms and the role of state and non-state actors in ongoing conflicts across the country. They emphasised that such allegations could further escalate tensions if not addressed promptly and responsibly by authorities.

In response to the growing public outcry, advocacy groups have urged the government to issue a clear statement and launch a thorough inquiry. They stressed that restoring public confidence requires accountability, verification of facts, and firm action to prevent the misuse of weapons in communities already facing insecurity.
