Egor Local Government stole the spotlight on the opening weekend of the Benin Unity Cup, which began on Friday. The team delivered a commanding performance, defeating Uhunmwode LG 5–1 in the tournament’s first match at the Crescent FC Sports Complex, Irhirhi, Benin City. The game was attended by the sponsor, Senator Neda Imasuen, along with several dignitaries.
In another match, Orhiomwon LG and Oredo 2 battled to a 1–1 draw after a closely contested encounter. Oredo 1, on the other hand, secured a walkover win as Ovia South-West LG failed to appear for their scheduled fixture.
Senator Imasuen, who chairs the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, praised the teams for their efforts and highlighted football’s growing global impact. He noted that Edo State has vast, untapped football potential capable of rising to elite standards. He also urged participating teams to strictly follow the rules of the competition.
