The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faction led by National Chairman Mohammed Abdulrahman, with the backing of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, is reportedly planning its own national convention in opposition to the November 16 event held by the Seyi Makinde-backed faction in Ibadan.

Ahead of the proposed convention, the PDP’s Board of Trustees (BoT) convened a crucial meeting in Abuja, pledging to restore confidence in the party and strengthen its structures by conducting congresses in states where they are still pending.

The meeting, held at the Life Camp residence of the FCT minister, drew senior party figures, including BoT members, National Working Committee (NWC) members, state chairmen, and National Assembly members. Notable attendees included PDP National Chairman Abdul-Rahman Mohammed, National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, former FCT Senator Philip Tanimu Aduda, former Abia Governor and ambassador-designate Okezie Ikpeazu, and Minister Nyesom Wike.

In his opening remarks, BoT Chairman Senator Mao Ohuabunwa emphasized the body’s commitment to stabilizing the party, rebuilding trust among members, and ensuring that all outstanding congresses are conducted transparently.

“We are working closely with the NWC to ensure every action aligns with due process, party guidelines, and the Electoral Act,” Ohuabunwa said. “We are reorganizing affected states, constituting credible caretaker committees, and preparing the ground for transparent congresses and the eventual national convention.”

He stressed that the reforms aim to rebuild trust, strengthen internal structures, and reinforce the PDP’s reputation as a disciplined, democratic institution. “The BoT, as the conscience of the party, must provide stability, wisdom, and moral guidance, safeguarding the soul of the PDP and steering it away from divisive tendencies,” he added.

Ohuabunwa called on party members to rise above personal sentiments, support ongoing reforms, and deepen cohesion to prepare the PDP for future leadership responsibilities. He also thanked attendees for traveling on short notice to participate in the meeting.

The BoT meeting is expected to be followed by a National Executive Committee (NEC) session later in the evening, where critical decisions on pending state congresses and the proposed national convention will be finalized.
