The Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) has restored 450 megawatts of generation capacity to Nigeria’s national grid following scheduled maintenance on the Geregu National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) plant in Kogi State.
The four‑week inspection, carried out by Siemens Energy, aimed to improve the plant’s reliability, efficiency, and operational lifespan by extending its Equivalent Operating Hours.
According to NDPHC’s Head of Communications, the upgrade is part of a broader initiative to revive dormant power assets across the company’s fleet.
In the past year, the company has successfully reactivated six previously idle gas turbines at various NIPP sites, boosting its mechanically available generation capacity by nearly 875 MW — one of the largest single‑year recoveries by a power generation firm in recent memory.
NDPHC also revealed plans to refurbish the 225 MW Gbarain NIPP Plant in Bayelsa State, which has been out of service since 2020. Once completed, this is expected to further improve power supply for industrial and commercial zones in the Niger Delta.
Despite ongoing challenges in gas supply, grid stability, and liquidity, the company noted that recent upgrades — including the retrieval of long‑abandoned turbine parts and reforms in procurement and staff management — mark a significant step toward more stable and sustainable electricity for homes and businesses across Nigeria.
