The Federal Bureau of Investigation has issued a warning to current and former U.S. government employees about a wave of fraudulent job offers believed to be linked to Chinese intelligence operations. According to the advisory, these fake opportunities are being used as a tactic to approach individuals who may have access to sensitive or classified information.
The FBI explained that the schemes often involve fabricated job postings or direct messages sent through professional networking platforms. The perpetrators typically pose as recruiters, consulting firms, or research organizations to appear credible and convince their targets to engage.
Officials noted that foreign intelligence actors are increasingly exploiting online job-seeking environments to identify and contact potential targets within the U.S. government. Even former employees remain at risk, especially those who once held security clearances or worked in sensitive roles.
The agency urged workers to stay alert, verify any unexpected job offers, and promptly report suspicious interactions. The FBI stressed that protecting government information remains a shared responsibility, regardless of employment status.
