Gunmen in Enugu State launched a deadly attack on a police patrol team on the night of Saturday, December 27, 2025, killing two officers and burning their patrol vehicle.

The assault took place around 8:30 p.m. on Zik Avenue, near the Good Shepherd Specialist Hospital in the Uwani area of Enugu metropolis. Security sources said the officers—identified as Inspectors Valentine Iheme and Anayo Ede—were on routine patrol when they were ambushed by a group of about six armed men arriving in an ash‑coloured SUV.

Witnesses and police sources reported that the attackers opened fire at close range, killing both officers almost instantly. They then shot at the patrol vehicle’s fuel tank, causing it to explode and burn completely.

Three AK‑47 rifles, each loaded with 30 rounds of live ammunition, were reportedly stolen from the scene by the assailants.

Authorities have deployed tactical units across Enugu to track down the suspects and recover the stolen firearms. While no group has officially claimed responsibility, some security experts have linked the attack to suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing.

The Enugu State Police Command has vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice and prevent further attacks, even as investigations continue and official statements remain pending.
