Ezekwesili Warns Senate Against Weakening Election Transparency Measures

Oby Ezekwesili, former federal minister and anti-corruption campaigner, has raised concerns over the National Assembly’s approach to reforms on how election results are transmitted. She cautioned that any attempt to delay or weaken mandatory digital reporting could undermine public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process.

According to Ezekwesili, the proposed changes leave gaps that may allow inconsistencies in vote reporting, which could spark disputes and create uncertainty during elections. She urged lawmakers to adopt robust systems that ensure election results are transmitted securely and promptly from all polling units.

Ezekwesili stressed that transparency in the reporting process is vital to prevent controversies that have marred past elections. She argued that the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy depends on clear rules that are applied consistently and cannot be easily circumvented.

The former minister also appealed to political leaders to prioritize the credibility of elections over partisan interests, emphasizing that citizens’ trust in the system is fragile and must be protected.

With general elections approaching, Ezekwesili’s warning highlights growing pressure on the legislature to modernize Nigeria’s voting systems and guarantee that results are accurate, verifiable, and delivered in real time.
