Peter Obi Criticizes Senate Over Electoral Bill, Warns of Democratic Setback

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has sharply criticized the Nigerian Senate’s recent decision on the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, which did not make real-time electronic transmission of election results mandatory. He described the move as a major setback that could weaken confidence in upcoming elections ahead of 2027.

In a statement on social media, Obi argued that refusing to require polling unit results to be sent electronically opens the door for manipulation and undermines efforts to improve transparency. He said this decision contradicts the calls by many Nigerians for stronger safeguards following disputes in past elections.

Obi questioned whether lawmakers are truly committed to strengthening democratic processes or are preserving outdated systems that benefit a select few. He highlighted examples from other African countries that have embraced technology to enhance electoral credibility.

The Senate, led by President Godswill Akpabio, maintained that electronic transmission remains permitted under the law but stopped short of making it mandatory, retaining provisions from the 2022 Electoral Act. Critics argue that this weakens public trust in election results.

Obi urged Nigerians to stay vigilant and stressed that without meaningful reforms, the country risks falling behind in democratic governance. He also called for close monitoring of electoral processes as preparations continue for the next general elections.
