Adeyanju Urges Top Leaders to Join Protest Against Changes to Election Result Transmission

Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has urged prominent political figures to support ongoing demonstrations in Abuja against recent changes to Nigeria’s electoral reform bill. Critics of the amendment argue that altering provisions on electronic transmission of election results could undermine transparency in future elections.

Adeyanju specifically called on leaders such as former Kaduna State governor Nasir El‑Rufai and former Attorney General Abubakar Malami to join the protest at the National Assembly. The demonstration comes in response to lawmakers’ decision to remove or modify the requirement for real-time electronic transmission of results from polling units, a measure advocates see as vital to preventing vote manipulation.

Last week, hundreds of protesters gathered outside the National Assembly under the banner “Occupy the National Assembly”, highlighting widespread concern over election integrity ahead of the 2027 general polls. Protesters insist that without legal safeguards for transparent results transmission, public confidence in elections could be seriously weakened.

Adeyanju emphasized that all segments of Nigeria’s political class should unite in demanding robust electoral reforms, calling on high-profile individuals to lend their support to strengthen the movement.
