The University of Abuja has strongly denied reports that it mismanaged Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) money intended for students.
In a statement on Wednesday, the university described the online claims as “false, misleading, and mischievous.” It confirmed that it received ₦256,142,500 from NELFUND on January 29, 2026, covering 2,245 students for the 2025/2026 academic session, emphasizing that the funds were not diverted or misused.
The university explained that disbursement only occurs after students submit formal applications. Some students had already paid their fees before the funds arrived and were advised to seek reimbursement, which is currently being processed.
Officials also clarified that any unclaimed funds are safely held in designated accounts until proper applications are received, rejecting claims that the money was “hoarded” or misappropriated.
University management praised the vice-chancellor, who assumed office in December 2025, for transparency and dedication to student welfare, urging the public to disregard the false report aimed at tarnishing the institution’s reputation.
