A prominent human rights organisation has condemned the recent arrest of investigative reporter Ahmed Sakpe, describing it as a serious threat to press freedom and urging stronger protections for journalists. The group expressed concern that the detention could discourage media professionals from reporting on issues of public interest.
Sakpe, known for his work with a radio station in Minna, was taken into custody by police following allegations related to online posts and defamation linked to his reporting. He is currently being held as authorities continue their investigation.
In response to the arrest, the rights group called on law enforcement and government officials to respect constitutional guarantees that protect freedom of expression and the press. They warned that punitive actions against journalists undermine democratic principles and discourage accountability reporting.
The organisation also urged the establishment of clear safeguards to ensure journalists can work without fear of arbitrary detention or harassment. It stressed that protecting press freedom is vital not only for media workers but also for the public’s access to reliable information.
