The Federal Government has launched a nationwide cancer awareness and free screening programme, kicking off activities in Ebonyi State as part of efforts to mark this year’s World Cancer Day. The initiative, aimed at improving early detection and reducing cancer‑related deaths, will offer no‑cost screening to the first 1,000 people at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki.

Officials say the screening will focus on the most common types of cancer and is designed to encourage early diagnosis, which can save lives and reduce the financial burden on families. Health authorities also revealed plans to provide follow‑up care and treatment for individuals who test positive during the exercise.

In addition to the free examinations, the programme includes training for healthcare workers on modern treatment protocols, safety procedures for chemotherapy, and improved pain management techniques. The exercise underscores a broader government push to strengthen healthcare services, expand insurance coverage, and modernise medical facilities across the country.

State officials welcomed the initiative and pledged support to ensure the programme’s success. They also highlighted the importance of ongoing public education about cancer prevention and the benefits of early detection, particularly in underserved communities.
