Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, the D’Tigress, fell 81–73 to Germany in a FIBA Women’s World Cup qualifying match in Villeurbanne, France. The loss ended their run in the tournament but provided valuable experience against top international competition.
Germany set the pace early, leading at the end of every quarter and gradually building a lead that proved decisive in the final period. The European side’s disciplined play made it difficult for Nigeria to gain sustained momentum.
Despite the defeat, the D’Tigress displayed moments of resilience, rallying at times and keeping the contest competitive. Several players made significant contributions, showcasing the team’s fighting spirit and determination.
Earlier in the qualifiers, Nigeria had secured wins against other opponents, highlighting their potential on the international stage. The tournament results reflected both the strengths and areas for improvement within the squad.
Although the team exited this phase with a loss, they had already qualified for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Berlin based on their success in the 2025 Women’s AfroBasket championship. Attention now shifts to preparations for the global tournament later this year.
