Members of Iran’s women’s national football team have arrived in Istanbul, Turkey, as part of their journey back home after withdrawing their earlier asylum requests in Australia. The team had initially sought protection while participating in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup but later decided to return to Iran.

Videos from the airport showed the players, dressed in team tracksuits, moving through immigration and being escorted to a hotel in Istanbul. The arrival marked a key stopover on the route back to their home country after a series of international flights.

The team had traveled through Malaysia and Oman before reaching Turkey. Their decision to withdraw asylum applications came amid mounting pressure and reports of threats toward their families, which influenced most players to rejoin the main squad.

A small number of team members remain in Australia, but the majority of the group is continuing the journey toward Iran. Officials accompanying the team are coordinating the travel arrangements to ensure a safe return.

This episode highlights the challenges faced by athletes navigating political and social pressures while competing internationally. The team’s movements have drawn attention worldwide, emphasizing both the personal and professional pressures on women in sports from countries with restrictive environments.
