A Nigerian legal practitioner has called for a thorough investigation into the violent death of an elderly woman in Cross River State, allegedly killed by a mob over claims of witchcraft.

The lawyer Ikechukwu Obasi condemned the incident as a grave violation of human rights, stressing that no individual deserves to be subjected to jungle justice under any circumstance. He urged security agencies to identify and prosecute those responsible, insisting that failure to act would only encourage similar acts of violence in communities.

According to reports, the victim was accused of engaging in witchcraft before being attacked by residents. The situation escalated rapidly, leading to her death despite the absence of any credible evidence to support the allegations. Such accusations have historically fueled mob actions in parts of the country, often targeting vulnerable individuals.

The legal expert further warned against the dangers of superstition-driven violence, calling on authorities to intensify public enlightenment and ensure the rule of law prevails. He emphasized that justice for the victim would serve as a deterrent and help curb the rising trend of mob killings linked to witchcraft accusations in the region.
