President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed all political appointees in his administration who plan to contest in the 2027 general elections to step down from their positions on or before March 31, 2026.
The directive was disclosed in a statement by the Head of Information and Public Relations at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Dewan Nengak Goshit. It is based on Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, as well as the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party primaries.
A circular signed by the SGF, Senator George Akume, and issued by the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Dr Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, clarified that the order applies to all categories of presidential appointees seeking elective positions.
Those affected include ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal assistants, directors-general, and chief executive officers of federal agencies, commissions, parastatals, and government-owned companies, along with other political appointees.
The statement instructed all affected officials to submit their resignation letters through the SGF’s office no later than the March 31 deadline.
President Tinubu said the move is aimed at ensuring compliance with electoral laws, promoting transparency, and creating a level playing field for all aspirants ahead of the elections.
He also reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring credible electoral processes in Nigeria.
