Canada has identified Abia State as a strategic partner for deepening economic and cultural ties with Nigeria. The announcement came during high-level discussions between the Deputy High Commissioner of Canada to Nigeria, Carlos Rojas-Arbulu, and Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, at Nvosi in Isiala Ngwa South.
Rojas-Arbulu, represented by Canada’s Trade Commissioner, Delane Boakye, highlighted aviation, clean energy, education, and agriculture as priority areas for collaboration. She noted that Nigeria is the second-largest source of international students in Canada, with over 17,000 Nigerian students currently studying there.
The Canadian delegation also emphasized Canada’s expertise in aircraft development and training, its strong agricultural base, and opportunities for workforce development as key areas for bilateral cooperation. Boakye described Nigerians as dynamic and entrepreneurial, underlining Canada’s interest in promoting investment and fostering stronger economic links.
Governor Otti welcomed the delegation, noting that Abia State’s most valuable asset is its human capital. He described Aba as both a commercial and emerging industrial hub and emphasized the state’s readiness to collaborate in renewable energy, aviation, agriculture, and education to accelerate economic growth and industrial development.
The Governor highlighted ongoing projects, including the construction of an international-standard airport in partnership with the Federal Government, with the runway already completed. He also reaffirmed that the state has the legal and regulatory frameworks in place to support energy partnerships and expressed optimism about building enduring ties with Canada.
The meeting included top state officials such as the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Emmanuel Meribole, and Commissioners for Agriculture, Education, Transport, and Arts and Culture, among others.
