Nigeria’s health professionals have taken to the streets of Abuja as part of a nationwide protest against the Health Sector Executive Bills 2026 under debate at the National Assembly. The demonstration, organised by the Joint Health Sector Unions and the Assembly of Healthcare Professional Associations, brought together workers from across the country at Unity Fountain before marching to the National Assembly Complex.
The unions argue that the proposed legislation, which has passed its first reading in the Senate, could disrupt existing healthcare structures, alter professional roles, and negatively affect workers’ welfare. Leaders urged their members to join the protest and educate the public on how the bills could impact the sector.
Healthcare worker groups like JOHESU, which includes major unions for medical and allied health staff, have a long history of engaging the government on pay, allowances, and professional issues. Their action comes amid ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s health system, including staff shortages, poor infrastructure, and the migration of professionals abroad.
The protest marks a significant show of opposition to these legislative changes by health sector workers.
