Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, on Wednesday joined Catholic faithful across the globe in commemorating the Chrism Mass, a pivotal liturgical observance within the Holy Week calendar.
The Chrism Mass, solemnly celebrated in dioceses worldwide, entails the consecration of sacred oils, the Oil of the Sick, the Oil of Catechumens, and the Holy Chrism, integral to the administration of ecclesiastical sacraments throughout the year. The rite, presided over by bishops in conjunction with priests, epitomizes ecclesial unity, sacrificial service, and spiritual rejuvenation.
In his address, Governor Otti expressed profound gratitude to God for the preservation of life and for guiding the Christian faithful through the Lenten season in anticipation of Easter.
“I join the clergy and the entire faithful in giving thanks to God for His grace in seeing us through the Lenten period and as we approach the celebration of Easter,” he stated.
Reflecting on the 2023 electoral process that ushered in his administration, Otti described the outcome as nothing short of providential, cautioning against regressive forces intent on undermining the strides achieved in the state.
He underscored the imperative of civic engagement, urging eligible citizens to procure their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) as a critical instrument for safeguarding democratic progress and forestalling any relapse into maladministration.
“What transpired in 2023 was indeed miraculous. However, there are vested interests that may seek to reverse these gains. The most potent safeguard against such regression remains the possession and use of your PVC,” the governor asserted.
He further emphasized the synergy between divine providence and human responsibility, admonishing citizens to actively participate in the democratic process.
“While divine intervention is undeniable, it must be complemented by individual action. One cannot abdicate responsibility and expect divine outcomes,” he added.
Governor Otti also conveyed appreciation to the presiding bishop for the opportunity to address the congregation and extended his felicitations to Christians ahead of Easter.
In his homily, the Catholic Bishop of Umuahia Diocese, Most Rev. Michael Kalu Ukpong, elucidated the theological significance of the Chrism Mass, highlighting its focus on the consecration of sacramental oils and the commemoration of the institution of the priesthood.
He reminded the faithful that all sacraments derive their essence from the passion, death, and resurrection of Christ, urging a period of sober reflection and spiritual introspection.
The bishop further cautioned against the indiscriminate acceptance of so-called “anointing oils” from self-acclaimed ministers, noting that the manifestation of miracles does not, in itself, authenticate divine ordination.
Governor Otti was accompanied by senior government officials and political stakeholders at the solemn ceremony.
