The Federal Government has announced that strikes in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions are now a thing of the past, assuring students, parents, and the public of uninterrupted academic calendars in universities and polytechnics.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, made this known in Lagos during the presentation of awards to beneficiaries of the Students Venture Capital Grant Initiative. He stated that lingering disputes with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) had been resolved through the 2025 FG/ASUU agreement, while discussions with the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) are nearing completion.

The agreement signed with ASUU on January 14, 2026, includes a 40 per cent salary increase for academic staff, improved pension arrangements, and renewed commitments to enhanced funding for universities.

Alausa dismissed reports suggesting a possible strike by university lecturers, describing them as false. He assured that all outstanding issues with ASUU had been addressed.

According to him, tertiary institutions will remain open without disruption, adding that progress has also been made in resolving concerns raised by non-academic staff, with a formal agreement expected soon.

He noted that the salary increment has already begun in many institutions, even ahead of the 2026 budget approval, with about 90 to 95 per cent of universities implementing the new pay structure.

On NASU negotiations, the minister said the government has concluded discussions with union leaders and is finalising the agreement, urging patience as the process is completed.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring improved welfare for all tertiary institution staff and maintaining a stable academic environment for students across the country.
