OAU VC, Scholars Applaud Tinubu Over Jimoh Ibrahim’s UN Appointment

The Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, along with other academics, has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Senator Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United Nations.

In a statement issued on behalf of the university’s Governing Council, Senate, Management, and entire community, Bamire described the appointment as a recognition of merit, competence, and leadership.

He noted that Ibrahim’s academic achievements, international exposure, and record of service make him well-suited for the role, adding that the development is a proud moment for OAU as one of its distinguished alumni takes on a global responsibility.

Bamire also commended President Tinubu for what he termed a strategic and thoughtful decision, expressing confidence that Ibrahim would effectively represent Nigeria and strengthen its voice at the United Nations.

Similarly, Professor Kehinde Olayode of OAU’s Department of International Relations described the appointment as timely, given ongoing changes in global diplomacy. He said the current international landscape requires individuals with strong academic backgrounds and diplomatic experience.

Olayode highlighted Ibrahim’s exposure through international engagements, including his involvement with the Inter-Parliamentary Union, as well as his academic training, noting that these would aid Nigeria’s participation in complex multilateral discussions.

In the same vein, Associate Professor Solomon Tai Okajare said the appointment reflects careful consideration, describing Ibrahim as intellectually sound, articulate, and analytical.

He added that Ibrahim possesses the skills needed to engage in effective, data-driven diplomacy and advance Nigeria’s interests on the global stage.

The scholars expressed optimism that Ibrahim’s new role would enhance Nigeria’s influence in international affairs and strengthen its engagement within the United Nations system.
