Super Eagles and Udinese goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, has been handed a two-month suspension after being found guilty of engaging in illegal betting activities by Italian football authorities.

According to a report by Football Italia on Tuesday, Okoye narrowly escaped a much harsher four-year ban for sporting fraud. The investigation was triggered by suspicious betting activity surrounding Udinese’s Serie A clash with Lazio on March 11, 2024. Okoye was booked in the 64th minute for time-wasting while his side led 2-1 — an incident that raised eyebrows due to a spike in bets predicting he would receive a yellow card.

The bets, placed predominantly at 8/1 odds in the Udine region, reportedly resulted in over €120,000 in winnings. Following the incident, Italian authorities launched an investigation involving Okoye and three other individuals, and the case was presented before the disciplinary commission in June 2025.

Though the case initially raised concerns of sporting fraud — a charge that could have ended Okoye’s career — the commission ultimately ruled that he had breached betting regulations. As a result, he was suspended for two months, with the ban taking effect from August 18, 2025, the day Udinese are scheduled to face Carrarese in the Coppa Italia.

Okoye, who joined Udinese from Watford in 2023 and has earned 18 caps for Nigeria, will miss six Serie A matches and will be eligible to return to action on October 19, 2025.
