Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, has commenced the induction training of 5,349 newly recruited teachers, signaling a major step forward in the state’s drive to strengthen its education system.
According to a statement signed by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Basic and Secondary Education, Kenechukwu Nwosu, the 12-day training is holding simultaneously in Umuahia and Aba. It is being facilitated by Lead Master Trainers and ERIT Consultants, with focus areas including modern teaching techniques, classroom management, digital literacy, inclusive education, and STEAM-based learning.
Governor Otti’s administration has emphasized teacher welfare through prompt salary payments and improved incentives, leading to renewed enthusiasm for public school teaching. This was evident earlier in the year when over 30,000 applications were submitted within two weeks of announcing the recruitment exercise.
The training is part of the wider AbiaFIRST Education Programme, which also covers:
Free and Compulsory Education for Primary 1 to JSS 3, effective January 2025.
Infrastructure Upgrade, including the retrofitting of 221 schools and construction of 20 Smart Schools.
Technical and Vocational Education Strengthening (TVET) to improve skills and employability among students.
With this initiative, Abia State is positioning itself as a model in teacher recruitment, training, and retention—ensuring access to quality education for every child.
