Abia Soccer Fest Kicks Off in Aba North with Thrilling Matches and Youth Empowerment Drive

The Abia Soccer Fest (ASF), a flagship grassroots football initiative of the Abia State Government, began its Aba North Local Government knockout stage in spectacular fashion at the Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba. The event drew a massive turnout of sports lovers, political leaders, students, and community members, all eager to witness the football fiesta.

In his opening remarks, the Executive Chairman of Aba North, Hon. Timothy Kalu Iheke, described the tournament as more than just a hunt for trophies, stressing that its true essence lies in empowering Abia youths through sports. He explained that the competition aims to discover and nurture raw talents for national and international football careers.

The opening fixtures lived up to expectations, with Team Umuogor Ward 12 defeating Team Ariaria Ward 9 by 2–0, while Team Umuola Ward 8 thrilled spectators with a commanding 8–2 win over Team Osusu I Ward 3. The matches set a vibrant tone for the knockout stage and the tournament at large.

Dignitaries at the event included Captain Eric Asomugha, Vice Chairman of the ASF Local Organizing Committee, alongside Aba North officials such as the Secretary to the Local Government, Hon. Frank Alaribe, and Legislative Council Leader, Hon. Nnamdi Sunday. With fixtures scheduled across Abia’s three senatorial zones, the Soccer Fest reflects Governor Alex Otti’s vision of harnessing sports as a tool for youth empowerment, unity, and talent development. Targeted at players aged 16–23, the ASF promises months of exciting football and talent discovery across the state.
