Human Rights Activist Urges Delta Governor to Shun Lavish Anniversary Celebration, Calls for Sober Reflection

A human rights activist, Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen, has warned Governor Sheriff Oborevwori against turning Delta State’s 34th anniversary into what he described as “lavish and unnecessary celebrations.”

In an open letter addressed to the governor, Agberen argued that the anniversary should be a period of sober reflection on what he termed the state government’s “subpar performance” and its negative impact on the lives of ordinary citizens. He urged the administration to channel resources into initiatives that would improve the welfare of Deltans.

According to him, genuine development lies in industrialization and the establishment of manufacturing companies that would provide food security, reduce crime, create jobs, and tackle poverty. He lamented that for the past 34 years, successive governments in Delta had prioritized self-enrichment over the wellbeing of the people, leaving behind a weak healthcare system, poor infrastructure, and limited opportunities for youth and investors.

Agberen congratulated the state on its anniversary but maintained that progress could only come if leaders addressed the dire realities confronting the people. He called on Deltans to remain vigilant and continue to hold government accountable for policies and actions that perpetuate underdevelopment.
