Khune Says Bassey’s Goal Against South Africa Should Have Been Disallowed

Former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, Itumeleng Khune, has insisted that Calvin Bassey’s equaliser for Nigeria should not have stood.

South Africa took the lead in the 25th minute after Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, accidentally put the ball into his own net. Nigeria later drew level just before halftime when Fulham defender Bassey scored with a header in the 45th minute.

However, the ball appeared to touch Bassey’s hand before crossing the line. Although Bafana Bafana players protested, the referee dismissed their appeals.

Expressing his disappointment, Khune said the goal would have been overturned had VAR been available. “I don’t know how the referee missed that. He was well positioned to see it, and if not, his assistant should have spotted it. Looking at Bassey’s leap, it’s clear something wasn’t right,” Khune told SABC.
