The opening round of this season’s UEFA Champions League group stage has wrapped up, with some of Europe’s biggest stars making an early mark on the scoring charts. Thursday night’s fixtures brought the curtain down on Matchday One, leaving a tight race at the top for the competition’s Golden Boot.
Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane and Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé headline the early list of leading scorers. Kane, England’s captain, struck twice in Bayern’s clash with Chelsea, while Mbappé, France’s skipper, also bagged a brace in Madrid’s victory over Marseille. Both men are level at the summit with two goals apiece.
They are joined by a host of other names who also found the net twice in their opening outings. Among them are Frankfurt’s Jonathan Burkardt, Atlético Madrid’s Marcos Llorente, Barcelona’s Marcus Rashford, Inter Milan’s Marcus Thuram, Sporting CP’s Francisco Trincão, Juventus striker Dušan Vlahović, and Slavia Praha’s Youssoupha Mbodji.
With the competition only just underway, the scoring race promises to be fierce. As the group stage continues, all eyes will be on whether Kane and Mbappé can maintain their blistering start or if others will overtake them in the race for Champions League top scorer.
