President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured Nigerians that the country is on the path of recovery and sustainable growth, declaring that “the worst is over” as his administration’s reforms begin to deliver results.

In his Independence Day address marking Nigeria’s 65th anniversary, Tinubu reflected on the nation’s journey since October 1, 1960, paying tribute to the founding fathers and nationalists such as Nnamdi Azikiwe, Obafemi Awolowo, Ahmadu Bello, Tafawa Balewa, Margaret Ekpo, and Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti. He said their vision of a strong, prosperous, and united Nigeria remains alive despite decades of challenges.

Highlighting progress made since 1960, the President noted the massive expansion of education, healthcare, infrastructure, and industry. From just two tertiary institutions at Independence, Nigeria now boasts over 270 universities, alongside thousands of secondary schools and health facilities.

Tinubu acknowledged the struggles of the past 65 years—including civil war, dictatorship, and political crises—but stressed that Nigerians have always endured with resilience and determination.

On the economy, he said his administration inherited a near-collapsed system in 2023, but chose the “path of reform over the comfort of business as usual.” He cited the removal of fuel subsidies, foreign exchange unification, and investments in infrastructure, healthcare, and education as bold steps that are now paying off.

According to him, GDP grew by 4.23% in the second quarter of 2025, inflation dropped to 20.12%—its lowest in three years—while external reserves rose to $42 billion, the highest since 2019. Nigeria, he added, has also recorded five consecutive trade surpluses, boosted non-oil exports, and achieved domestic petrol refining for the first time in four decades.

The President further noted improved oil output, stronger fiscal health, and social investment programmes reaching millions of households. He praised the armed forces for gains in the fight against terrorism, banditry, and violent crime, while assuring young Nigerians of continued support through student loans, credit facilities, and the iDICE digital innovation programme.

Admitting that inflation and the high cost of living remain a concern, Tinubu urged citizens to stay hopeful, assuring that sacrifices made are laying a solid foundation for a better Nigeria. He called on Nigerians to embrace productivity, innovation, and patronage of Made-in-Nigeria goods.

“Let us be a nation of producers, not just consumers. The dawn of a new, prosperous, and self-reliant Nigeria is here,” Tinubu declared.
