Victor Osimhen hailed Galatasaray as “the best team in the world” after his decisive penalty secured a dramatic 1-0 Champions League victory over Liverpool on Tuesday night.

The Nigerian striker, making his first start in three weeks, calmly converted from the spot in the 16th minute after Dominik Szoboszlai fouled Baris Alper Yilmaz. His strike proved the difference in a fiercely contested clash at a deafening Rams Park, handing the Turkish champions a rare but seismic group-stage win and leaving Liverpool boss Arne Slot under pressure following consecutive defeats.

Liverpool pressed late on and thought they had a lifeline with a late penalty, only for VAR to overturn the decision in the 89th minute.

Reflecting on the victory, Osimhen praised his teammates and fans:
“It was a tough match against one of Europe’s greatest clubs, but we stuck together. I’ve been out for three weeks, but with the support of our fans and the constant chanting of my name, I felt stronger. For me, Galatasaray is the best team in the world.”

Speaking to CBS Sports, he added: “Liverpool are one of the best teams of the last decade. Beating them is a huge motivation, but we won’t get carried away. This is only the beginning, and we know we still have work to do.”

Osimhen’s goal also marked a personal milestone, taking his tally to 10 Champions League goals—the first Nigerian player to reach double figures in the competition proper. He surpassed Obafemi Martins (9) and moved ahead of legends such as Nwankwo Kanu, Victor Ikpeba, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, and Ademola Lookman, all tied on five goals each.

The win, Galatasaray’s second in their last 19 Champions League group matches, came in the club’s 120th anniversary year, making it even more symbolic as they continue their pursuit of a fourth straight Turkish Super Lig crown.
