Swedish FA Dismisses Jon Dahl Tomasson After Third Consecutive Qualifying Defeat

The Swedish Football Association has announced the dismissal of national team coach Jon Dahl Tomasson following a string of poor results in their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign. The decision, made on Tuesday and effective immediately, comes after Sweden suffered three consecutive defeats, leaving their qualification hopes hanging by a thread.

In a statement, FA President Simon Astrom explained that the move was necessary to revive Sweden’s World Cup bid. “There is still a chance to make the playoffs in March, and our responsibility is to ensure that we have the best possible conditions for reaching the World Cup finals,” Astrom said, emphasizing the need for a new direction before it’s too late.

Sweden’s latest setback came on Monday in Gothenburg, where they fell 1-0 to Kosovo courtesy of a goal from Hoffenheim forward Fisnik Asllani. Despite fielding Premier League stars Viktor Gyökeres of Arsenal and Alexander Isak of Liverpool, the Swedes have failed to find the net in their last three matches and now sit bottom of Group B.

Tomasson, a former Denmark international and ex-AC Milan striker, took charge of the national team in February 2024 with high expectations. However, his tenure has been marred by underwhelming performances and disappointing results. The Swedish FA confirmed that the search for his replacement “will begin immediately” as the team looks to salvage its World Cup campaign.
