Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, have advanced to the Round of 16 at the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, following a commanding 4-0 victory over Samoa in their final group match on Saturday.

The win marks a strong comeback for the Nigerian girls, who had earlier suffered defeats to Canada (1-4) and France (0-1) in their first two group games. Facing a must-win situation, the Flamingos delivered an energetic and dominant performance to secure qualification.

Queen Joseph starred for Nigeria, netting a brace to take her tournament tally to three goals. Captain Shakirat Moshood scored from the penalty spot, while defender Azeezat Oduntan sealed the win with a brilliant cross-shot in the 67th minute.

Joseph opened scoring in the 13th minute, finishing off a precise pass from Moshood. Moshood then doubled the lead in the 27th minute after Holly Leapai handled the ball inside the box. Joseph struck again in the 36th minute, converting Nguemo Terlumun’s cross to make it 3-0 before halftime.

Although Moshood missed a second penalty early in the second half, Oduntan’s late goal and goalkeeper Sylvia Echefu’s fine saves ensured a clean sheet for Nigeria.

The result means the Flamingos, who won bronze at the 2022 edition in India, move into the knockout stage with renewed confidence and hopes of surpassing their previous achievement.

The Guardian recalls that Nigeria were placed in Group A alongside France, Canada, and Samoa following the draw held on June 5, 2025, at the Mohammed VI Football Academy in Rabat.

The Flamingos will now await their Round of 16 opponents as they continue their quest for glory in Morocco.
